Defensive line coach Shaun Nua has left Navy to join head coach Herm Edwards’ staff at Arizona State in the same position, the Sun Devils announced Sunday.
“Shaun Nua is a well-respected and talented young coach with a bright future ahead of him,” Edwards said in a press release. “He is known for the high energy he brings while coaching his players and also for being an incredibly caring and compassionate person off the field. He is exactly the kind of person we want coaching at Arizona State.”
Navy went 52-27 while Nua coached the defensive line from 2012-17. He previously coached from 2009-2011 as an intern and grad assistant at BYU, his alma mater.
Nua, 36, was a seventh-round NFL draft pick in 2005 and played for the Pittsburgh Steelers from 2005-07. He was on the Buffalo Bills’ roster from 2007-08.
Before playing at BYU, the defensive end by trade attended Eastern Arizona Junior College from 2000-02.
“I’m excited. I’m honored. I’m ready. This is literally a dream come true for me,” Nua said in a statement. “I am very familiar with the Sun Devil program and have experience in the state as Arizona is truly where I got my start in collegiate football. I look forward to helping Coach Edwards and his staff achieve their goals at ASU.”
