Former D-back Eric Byrnes returns to the field to raise money for Pat Tillman Foundation

Apr 30, 2014, 4:52 PM | Updated: 4:52 pm

Eric Byrnes will be returning to the baseball field in August on a two-day contract with the San Rafael Pacifics of the Pacific Association.

“This is a thrill for me to go back to the roots of baseball,” Byrnes told the San Francisco Chronicle. “The Pacifics and all of Indy ball are what it’s all about — a close connection with the fans and with the community. The guys I’m playing with are not in it for the money or fame; they do this because they love the game. I’m proud to be a small part of it.”

But Byrnes is not going to be playing because he misses the game or wants to give professional ball one last shot. No, Byrnes will be taking the field looking to raise funds for the Pat Tillman Foundation.

According to the Chronicle, the Pacifics will be donating a portion of the ticket sales from Aug. 5 and 6 — the games he will play — to the foundation. Along with that, Byrnes will be donating his Pacifics salary to the foundation, which supports veterans and spouses via education scholarships and other means.

Furthermore, he’ll donate $1,000 for each of his walks, steals and singles, $2,000 for a double; $3,000 for a triple and $10,000 for a homer. Plus, $500 for every ball he catches.
