ASU’s Jon Rahm tied for 3rd after 1st round of The Open

Arizona State alumnus and PGA pro Jon Rahm led for a portion of Thursday’s opening round at The Open Championship in Portrush, Northern Ireland, but slipped some at the end to finish three under on the day and tied for third in the tournament.
With a win this weekend, Rahm would secure his first Major title and fourth PGA TOUR victory. He currently ranks 11th in the FedEx Cup ranking.
Rahm, J.B. Holmes (the leader after the first round) and Webb Simpson were the only players on Thursday to reach 5 under par at any point on the day. The Barrika, Spain native missed a five-foot putt for par on No. 16 and lost another shot on No. 18 to go three under. That score tied him with 12 other players, including World No. 1-ranked golfer Brooks Koepka, for third place.

Rahm entered the tournament as the sixth-ranked golfer in the world. Paul Casey is the next Sun Devil behind him at No. 15.
