Right-handed pitcher Taylor Widener has been reinstated from the 10-day injured list, the Arizona Diamondbacks announced Sunday morning.

Widener had been placed on the injured list on Aug. 31 after suffering a strained right rib cage.

In conjunction with the move, pitcher Joel Payamps had been optioned to the Alternate Training Site.

Widener has appeared in 10 games, all out of the bullpen, and has a 4.42 ERA. He has 20 strikeouts to 10 walks in 18.1 innings, and opponents have hit .185 off him.

“He was in a very, very good spot prior to the injury so I know that he’s very poised and ready to jump in as fast as he possibly can,” manager Torey Lovullo said to media on Zoom.

“As young players mature, you start to see the things that he was doing on a nightly basis whenever he was called upon.”

This is the 25-year-old’s first season with major league experience. He last pitched Aug. 28.

Payamps has appeared in two games this season, the most recent of which was Sept. 12.

Ketel Marte update

The D-backs are still hopeful Marte can return before the end of the season.

In recent days, Marte swung in a batting cage, hit breaking balls off a machine and hit off coach pitch. He also got onto the field.

“He is very encouraged by how he’s feeling,” Lovullo said.

Marte will get on the field in an exhibition game Sunday and get two or three at-bats, Lovullo said, and added that Marte is in “a really good spot.”

The second baseman has been on the injured list with wrist inflammation since Sept. 10.

The D-backs play against the Houston Astros on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 11:10 a.m. Listen live at ESPN 620 AM.
