A closer look: Miley, D-backs fall to Zito, Giants

Sure, you could read the box score and know who won, but we all know that won’t tell you everything that happened in a baseball game. So, we will give you a closer look, providing you with the analysis, quotes and notes from the D-backs’ September 15 loss to the Giants. Final score: Giants 3, Diamondbacks 2.

The Good:

Aaron Hill had a diving grab to rob Giants pitcher Barry Zito of a hit that will surely be worthy of a web gem nomination.

Justin Upton hit his 14th home run of the season over the left field wall in the fourth inning.

The Bad:

The D-backs dropped their second consecutive game to the Giants and are now in danger of being swept by their division rivals.

Wade Miley only allowed three runs over the course of seven innings pitched, but nonetheless he was handed his 10th loss of the season due to a stark lack of run support in the game.

The Ugly:

Jason Kubel is 27-for-162 since July 23rd, which is equivalent to a .167 batting average. Kubel is still hitting third in the lineup.

Arizona has now scored four or fewer runs in 12 straight home games, as even having the roof open the last two nights has not helped the team drive the ball.

He Said It:

“Dropped two close ones. Last night we had some runners in scoring position and didn’t get it done. [Saturday] it was kind of the same thing, we didn’t get the big hit.” – D-backs’ Justin Upton after the loss.

Up Next:

The Diamondbacks will have Patrick Corbin (5-7, 4.19) on the mound against Ryan Vogelsong (12-8, 3.40) as Arizona will look to avoid being swept by the Giants.
