Coach Whisenhunt expects Beanie Wells back soon

Jul 30, 2012, 7:17 PM | Updated: 9:01 pm

Beanie Wells was placed on the Physically Unable to
Perform
list at the beginning of training camp, a move that has
led
many to worry about the running back’s status coming into
the season.

And why shouldn’t they?

Wells, who ran for a career-best 1,047 yards and 10
touchdowns last season, had knee surgery in the offseason
and has yet to get back on the practice field.

Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt, though, said Monday that
Wells is progressing nicely and should return to the field
soon.

“We’ll see Beanie in the preseason,” Whisenhunt said. “I
think he’ll probably start doing some work next week.”

Whisenhunt said the preference is to get Wells some
preseason action — probably later contests — but
cautions
that it all depends on how his player’s rehab goes.

And while Wells may be making progress, an issue could
soon arrive due to a lack of depth at the running back
position.

With second-year pro Ryan Williams still working his way
back from a serious injury and Javarris James out with an
abductor ailment, LaRod Stephens-Howling, Alfonso Smith
and William Powell are the only backs who can practice
with no limitations as of right now.

“What you worry about is if we get one more, then we’re
pretty thin,” Whisenhunt said.
