Left-handed pitcher Tommy Henry will make his MLB debut and start for the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday against the Cleveland Guardians after he was recalled from Triple-A Reno.

The D-backs also transferred lefty Tyler Gilbert to the 60-day injured list with a sprained left elbow — he had been on the 15-day IL — while optioning right-hander Taylor Widener to Reno.

Henry is the 13th-ranked prospect in the D-backs’ farm system, per MLB Pipeline, and has started all 20 of his Triple-A appearances. He has a 4-4 record, 3.83 ERA and 1.34 WHIP this season.

Henry will slot into a rotation that just went through some shuffling with Corbin Martin heading to the minors and veteran Zach Davies getting activated off the injured list on Monday for a start. The D-backs also lost Gilbert to an elbow issue that put him on the injured list retroactive to last Wednesday.

The news of Henry’s call-up came an hour before the trade deadline on Tuesday.

The Diamondbacks drafted Henry in 2019 during the competitive balance B round. He was the 74th overall pick.

Henry made three appearances in Short-A ball after that draft before sitting out the 2020 season due to the pandemic and then moving to Double-A in 2021, where he posted a 5.21 ERA in 23 starts.

Henry advanced to Triple-A this season and has 100 strikeouts to 44 walks in 108.0 innings.

He’s allowed 11 home runs and 46 earned runs in that span.

The Athletic’s Zach Buchanan reported that MLB Pipeline’s top-five prospect in the franchise, pitcher Brandon Pfaadt, was promoted to Triple-A with Henry’s own move up the chain.

First pitch for Henry’s MLB debut is set for 10:10 a.m. MST in Cleveland. Tune to ESPN 620 AM or 98.7 FM HD-2 for the game.
