Sedona Red Recap: D-backs rally late to sweep the Rockies

PHOENIX — Socrates Brito got a chance to prove to the Arizona Diamondbacks what he was all about before the season ended and he took advantage of it.
Brito’s 3-for-3 night propelled the D-backs to an 8-6 win over the Colorado Rockies.
The 23-year-old rookie had an RBI triple, two singles, two runs scored, and a stolen base. The triple and the stolen base were the first of Brito’s career.
He entered the game in the top of the fourth inning after a failed sliding catch by David Peralta had him exit the game in the bottom half. X-rays were negative and Peralta is day-to-day with an injured right wrist.
The Rockies put up enough offense to make the D-backs rally multiple times. Colorado had hits in five of the first seven innings of the game and scored runs in all of those innings.
The D-backs offense showed great resiliency though, scoring in every inning the Rockies did except for the sixth.
Brito’s biggest hit of the night would be a single in the seventh inning to keep the inning alive. That allowed Welington Castillo to hit a two-RBI double to give the D-backs a 7-6 lead. Two straight wild pitches by reliever Boone Logan brought Castillo in to make it 8-6.
With Brad Ziegler still away and Daniel Hudson having pitched in three straight games, rookie Silvino Bracho got a chance at his first major league save. Like Brito, Bracho took advantage and got the D-backs the win.
THE GOOD
– The D-backs had some efficient hitting to start the game. A.J. Pollock and Phil Gosselin had back-to-back singles and then Paul Goldschmidt provided the sacrifice fly. Another single came from David Peralta and a high-bouncing groundball from Welington Castillo brought in the second run.
– Goldschmidt’s RBI in the first inning was the 409th of his D-back career, moving him ahead of Chris Young for fourth all-time in D-backs history. He now trails only Miguel Montero (448), Steve Finley (479), and Luis Gonzalez (774).
– After Gosselin’s near catch allowed the Rockies to score in the first inning, the second baseman wouldn’t make that same mistake in the second inning. On another line drive in his vicinity, Gosselin dived to his right and made a fantastic catch to end the inning.
– Jake Lamb’s great diving stop on a grounder hit by Tom Murphy in the first inning prevented another run from coming in for the Rockies.
– Gosselin’s solo home run in the seventh inning was a unique one. The ball was over the fence, but bounced off the fan in the front row and back into the field of play. That’s a home run, but the umpires never signaled it and it was a live ball. As it turns out, Gosselin scored on the inside the park home run anyway.
THE BAD
– With two runners on and two outs in the first inning, Gosselin jumped for a line drive headed over his head and had it bounce off his glove and continue into the infield. It was ruled an RBI single for DJ LeMahieu and produced the first run of the game.
– A wild pitch by Corbin in the fourth inning allowed Wilin Rosario to score and tie the game up at 2-2.
– Enrique Burgos had two wild pitches in the seventh inning, both of which landed in front of the plate and allowed a runner to advance from second to third.
STAT OF THE GAME
38: A.J. Pollock had his 38th stolen base of the season. Pollock is now the only player in the majors with more than thirty stolen bases, an OPS above .810 (.861) and at least 100 runs scored (108).
HE SAID IT
“I don’t think his pulse ever changes,” – D-backs manager Chip Hale on Brito.
NOTED
– Paul Goldschmidt received the first-ever Luis Gonzalez award for his contributions as both a player and a member of the community.
– As a part of throwback Thursday, former D-back Albie Lopez threw out the first pitch to former D-back Robby Hammock.
– A bizarre play by Jose Reyes almost cost the Rockies. In the fourth inning with runners on first and second, Patrick Corbin was up to bat and hit a slow grounder to short. Instead of throwing out Corbin at first, Reyes elected to flip the ball to second. The runner, Chris Owings, was initially ruled safe, until a review overturned that call.
– Hale picked up his 78th win of the season as the D-backs manager. That now gives him the second-best record for a D-backs manager in their first 162 games. He trails only Bob Brenly’s 92-70 start in 2001.
– The D-backs have now homered in 10 of their last 13 home games.
UP NEXT
On Friday the D-backs start their final series of the season against the Houston Astros. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m., with pregame coverage starting at 6:00 p.m. on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM.
Taking the mound for the D-backs will be Rubby De La Rosa. De La Rosa (14-8) has won his last two starts, giving up only two runs combined in those outings. He is looking to get his 15th win of the season, a number that hasn’t been reached by a Diamondback since Wade Miley (16) and Ian Kennedy (15) both did it in 2012.
The Astros are in the middle of a playoff race and will bring out their ace Dallas Keuchel to start the pivotal series. Keuchel (19-8) leads the American League in wins and is looking to become a 20 game winner. He only trails David Price for the best ERA in the AL with a 2.47.
