Newly-hired Arizona State offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey is a candidate to return to Southern Miss, the school the Sun Devils hired him away from this winter.

The former Southern Mississippi offensive coordinator is a strong candidate to return as head coach after Todd Monken left the Golden Eagles to become offensive coordinator of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, reports FOX Sports’ Bruce Feldman.

The Sun Devils hired Lindsey away from Southern Miss in mid-December, making him the replacement for Mike Norvell, who took the head coaching job at Memphis.

Feldman reports that Southern Miss athletic director Bill McGillis is searching for a head coach with a strong offensive background, and the 40-year-old Lindsey fits the bill after he turned the Golden Eagles into a formidable offensive team this past season.

Southern Mississippi averaged 40.6 points per game in 2015, 12th-best in college football. The year prior, the Golden Eagles scored 19 points per game, which ranked 117th.

With national signing day upcoming on Feb. 3, McGillis expects the school to hire a new head coach by next week.

Before taking the offensive coordinator job at Arizona State, Lindsey turned down head coaching jobs at Eastern Kentucky and Louisiana-Monroe, according to Feldman.
