The Arizona State defense took a hit Wednesday as senior defensive end James Brooks announced he was leaving the team for personal reasons.

Brooks, who may best be remembered for his blocking of extra points in the Territorial Cup game against Arizona, has 8 career sacks and 53 tackles. He left the team once before, but says this time he’s not coming back.

The Sun Devils, a favorite to win the Pac-12 South, still have a formidable defense. Though Brooks’ departure is not a good thing, chances are good the team, led by star Vontaze Burfict, will not suffer too much.
