Depending on how Shelby Miller’s rehab start goes with Single-A Visalia on Tuesday, he could make his first start for the D-backs since May 24 as soon as Sunday against the Phillies.

In Miller’s first rehab start with Visalia, he struck out 11 batters in six scoreless innings.

Before game two of the D-backs v. Dodgers series Tuesday, Chip Hale spoke with Burns and Gambo on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM and discussed Miller’s timetable for his return.

“(Dave) Stewart went to watch him pitch tonight in Bakersfield, so he’s going to get a good look first-hand,” Hale said. “We sent Brad Arnsberg, one of our rehab pitching coordinators, so he will be with him to get a good look. Then, we will make a decision and does he need another one or not? If not, we’ll have to see where he fits in.”

If Miller is to return to the rotation this weekend he would likely take Zack Godley’s spot.

Godley earned the victory against the Marlins on Saturday when he pitched six innings, giving up just two runs on four hits.

Numbness in Miller’s right index finger paired with his inability to get outs, as seen in his 1-6 record and 7.09 ERA, resulted in the D-backs placing him on the 15-day disabled list.

When asked if Miller has improved physically and mentally, Hale responded, “physically he’s definitely better. His finger is 100 percent. Mentally he’s much better and his last side work was as good as Butch (D-backs pitching coach) has seen. We’ll see how it goes.”

Hale continued, “Let’s hope it goes well tonight, he stays injury free and we have to make a decision to fit him back in.”
