Ravens tackle Stanley adopts ‘unadoptable’ dog

Most animal lovers would tell someone who is looking to purchase a dog to find one at the local pound or animal shelter.

The idea, of course, is that the person would then be “rescuing” a dog who deserves a chance at finding a forever home.

However, while that’s a great thing to do, Baltimore Ravens tackle Ronnie Stanley took his dog-adoption effort to another level.

As noted by Barkpost.com, Stanley, with his girlfriend and a teammate in tow, stopped by BARCS — the city’s animal shelter — with an uncommon request.

“We are looking for dog [sic] that’s been here a long time and maybe not-so-adoptable,” is how BARCS put it in our new favorite Facebook post.”

Now, that could open up Stanley to a variety of different dogs with multiple “issues.” Some may have been older, and more often than not people look for puppies or younger animals. Others may have been certain breeds, the kind of which carry a stigma (warranted or not).

At any rate, Stanley and his crew ended up with Winter, a 6-year-old Pitbull mix. From BARC’s Facebook:

Beautiful Winter is a dog who has spent most of her six years of life falling into sad, unfortunate situations. She was found on a vacant property, on a hot day with no electricity, or open windows. She was dehydrated and extremely frightened. Winter has a long, hanging belly, mostly likely a result of over breeding–something we see far too often at our shelter. Due to her age, her belly is not something that will ever tighten up. Female dogs with such characteristics are often passed by in our shelter–but not by Ronnie!

The shelter’s hope is that Stanley’s decision will spur others to do the same and seek out pets who may otherwise have trouble finding homes. But if nothing else, the Raven saved one dog, and that’s something to feel good about.
