Josh Collmenter officially released by Diamondbacks

Aug 7, 2016, 11:34 AM | Updated: 1:47 pm

The Arizona Diamondbacks announced the team has officially released veteran pitcher Josh Collmenter.

Arizona optioned Collmenter for assignment on July 30 in an attempt to shake up the team’s pitching struggles. Collmenter appeared in 15 major league games this season, going 1-0 with a 4.84 ERA.

Throughout his career with the Diamondbacks, the only team Collmenter has played for, the 30-year-old held a record of 36-33 with a 3.54 ERA in 200 games. Over the course of six seasons, Collmenter ranks fourth in all-time ERA in Diamondbacks history, behind only Randy Johnson, Curt Schilling and Brandon Webb. The pitcher also ranks in the top ten in wins, WAR for pitchers, innings pitched and strikeouts.

Collmenter was one of three remaining Diamondback players from the 2011 season, along with first baseman Paul Goldschmidt and pitcher Daniel Hudson. That was the last time the team made the playoffs.

The pitcher leaves behind a wealth of memories for the team and fans, including teaching physics to players and wielding a unique pitching motion that gave him the nickname “Tomahawk”.

Collmenter was Arizona’s Opening Day starter last season, joining the likes of Johnson, Webb, Dan Haren, Ian Kennedy and Zack Greinke.
