Report: Florida coaching search won’t include Arizona Wildcats’ Rich Rodriguez

Nov 17, 2014, 5:32 PM | Updated: 6:59 pm

As soon as it was announced Sunday that Florida coach Will Muschamp will step down at the end of the 2014 season, Arizona Wildcats coach Rich Rodriguez was labeled by many media outlets as one of Muschamp’s most likely replacements.

But Rodriguez will not be a part of the Gators’ head coach search, ESPN’s Brett McMurphy reported Monday.

The report said Rodriguez and sixth-year Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen — both of whom have been rumored as a possible replacement for Muschamp — will not be pursued by Florida. UA athletics director Greg Byrne, who hired Rodriguez in 2011, also hired Mullen while Byrne was the Bulldogs’ AD in 2008.

Rodriguez is 24-12 in his three seasons in Tucson, and he has led UA to an 8-2 record (5-2 Pac-12) and a No. 14 College Football Playoff ranking this season. The Wildcats, who are coming off a 27-26 home win over Washington last weekend, will visit No. 23 Utah on Saturday.
