Tyson Chandler’s ‘block of the year’ isn’t quite what you’d expect

Dec 14, 2014, 3:35 AM | Updated: 4:37 am

Dallas Mavericks center Tyson Chandler practically invented a new statistical category on Saturday.

Forget shot blocks. How about shoe blocks?

In the third quarter of a game against the Golden State Warriors, forward Marreese Speights lost his shoe. Speights went an offensive play and a whole defensive one before even attempting to retrieve his sneaker.

After the Warriors forced a Dallas miss, Stephen Curry tried to toss the shoe to his unbalanced teammate just behind halfcourt.

That’s when Chandler stepped in and swatted the sneaker out of bounds, much to the crowd’s delight.

Curry even made a quick gesture to the closest referee, looking for some kind of call…any kind of call. Luckily for Speights, Dallas committed a foul a couple of seconds after Chandler’s rejection, and there was some time for the Warriors forward to put his shoe back on.

Many social media users dubbed the play the “block of the year.”

Golden State got the last laugh, though, winning on the road 105-98, the team’s 15th victory in a row.

Chandler finished the game with 11 points and 12 boards, but he failed to record any traditional blocks.
