First Richard Sherman got paid. Then it was Joe Haden. Finally, Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson received his contract extension.

By the time they all received their lengthened deals, the cornerback position became classified as the new prima donnas of the NFL, highlighted by the Twitter and radio duel with Sherman and Peterson.

The wait allowed the Cardinals to make him the highest paid cornerback in the league. An ensuing exchange with the two led to Sherman tweeting a picture of his championship ring.

All of this offseason banter between Peterson and Sherman has been made in jest, according to the Seahawks cornerback.

“It’s all fun,” Sherman told ESPN 710 in Seattle. “You got to see who’s the most clever.”

Sherman said Peterson and him are “friends,” having known each other since working out together at the 2011 NFL combine.

Sherman also addressed his detractors in the interview, which include Peterson, who claim he covers space instead of the opposing team’s top receiver.

“A lot of the greatest cornerbacks to play only played one side,” Sherman said, citing Deion Sanders as an example. “And guess what, they won. A lot of the greatest (Super Bowl) champion cornerbacks played one side. A lot of cornerbacks that travel never won anything.

“Whenever somebody else is telling somebody else how to play defense when we’re the No. 1 defense in the land with the most turnovers and the least points given up, then they probably need to change what they’re doing because obviously they’re not doing something right.”
