Bruce Arians pleased with start Arizona Cardinals have had in free agency

The Arizona Cardinals got off to a fast start in free agency.

Thus far, they have signed guard Mike Iupati, center/guard A.Q. Shipley, defensive linemen Cory Redding and Corey Peters, and linebackers Sean Weatherspoon and LaMarr Woodley.

It’s a mix of youth and experience, some presumed starters and others likely viewed as depth.

It’s a group that Cardinals coach Bruce Arians is pleased to have on board.

“We just had, really, three good days of fortifying both lines of scrimmage, offensive and defensive linemen in free agency, picked up some linebackers,” he told 97.5 the Fanatic in Philadelphia Friday. “So I’m extremely excited about going into the draft without any actual needs.”

Arians then brought up the running back position, which has been the subject of some speculation over the last few days, saying the team had some players step up at the end of last season after starter Andre Ellington was lost for the year.

While the Cardinals have eaten up a good chunk of their available cap space with their signings, there is still some money to work with. So, they’re probably not done just yet.

In fact, it’s worth noting that Cardinals general manager Steve Keim has been fairly adept at adding top-flight talent at bargain-bin prices late in the process. It usually results in one-year deals with a player who is looking to parlay one more good season into a more lucrative, long-term contract the following year.

But if nothing else, the Cardinals seem to be in a pretty good spot in terms of roster construction. After all, the fewer needs a team has, the better.
