The D-backs made several trades in the weeks, days and hours leading up to the MLB trade deadline on July 31. Unfortunately for them, so did their competitors in the NL West and Wild Card playoff races.

As of Monday afternoon, Arizona was 60-45, 14 games back of the Dodgers in second place in the division. In the Wild Card race, the D-backs are in first place with a half-game lead over Colorado and a six-game lead over Milwaukee.

Should Milwaukee pass the Cubs in the NL Central, the Cubs would be in the Wild Card hunt.

So, with the Diamondbacks chasing a playoff spot, here are the big pieces acquired on or before MLB trade deadline day by teams in the NL West and Wild Card hunt, starting with the D-backs themselves:

Arizona Diamondbacks

J.D. Martinez: The D-backs got Martinez from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for three prospects on July 18. A right-handed bat who can fill an outfield spot left behind by the injured Yasmany Tomas, Martinez has already hit five home runs in nine games since the trade.

John Ryan Murphy: It’s not what you’d call a blockbuster, but the D-backs picked up Murphy, a catcher, from the Minnesota Twins last week in exchange for a minor-league pitcher in Gabriel Moya. Murphy has played parts of four seasons with the Yankees and Twins and has a career .238 batting average. He’s now in Triple-A Reno.

Adam Rosales: After news came down that Chris Owings was on the 60-day DL with a fractured finger and infielder Ketel Marte was on the bereavement list due to the death of his mother, the D-backs announced the acquisition of Rosales from the A’s. The D-backs are also missing the shortstop Nick Ahmed due to injury, so Rosales, a 10-year veteran infielder, can help fill the void. In return, the D-backs sent Single-A hurler Jeferson Mejia to Oakland.

David Hernandez: In search of a reliever, the D-backs get a familiar face by acquiring the right-handed reliever who played for Arizona from 2011 to 2015. Most recently with the Angels, Hernandez comes over in exchange for minor league right-hander Luis Madero.

Los Angeles Dodgers

Yu Darvish: The Dodgers won the highly-coveted Darvish sweepstakes, sending three prospects to the Texas Rangers. Darvish is a 30-year-old righty with a 4.01 ERA this season and career 3.42 ERA. But before his last start in which he gave up 10 earned runs, Darvish had a 3.44 ERA on the year.

Tony Watson: Los Angeles added a bullpen piece by dealing two prospects to the Pittsburgh Pirates for the lefty Watson. The 32-year-old has seven years of MLB experience and a 3.66 ERA this season.

Tony Cingrani: The Dodgers sent Scott Van Slyke and a catching prospect to the Cincinnati Reds for lefty reliever Tony Cingrani. The 28-year-old has a 5.40 ERA in 25 games this year.

Colorado Rockies

Jonathan Lucroy: The Rockies got former all-star catcher Jonathan Lucroy from the Rangers for a player to be named later. The 31-year-old is hitting .242 with four home runs and 27 RBI this season.

Pat Neshek: Colorado added some bullpen help by sending three prospects to the Phillies in exchange for Neshek. The veteran right-hander has a 1.29 ERA in 45 appearances this year.

Milwaukee Brewers

Anthony Swarzak: The Brewers sent utility prospect Ryan Cordell to the Chicago White Sox for righty reliever Anthony Swarzak (2.32 ERA in 2017).

Jeremy Jeffress: Jeffress, a hard-throwing, right-handed reliever, heads back to his former team as the Brewers sent a prospect to the Texas Rangers in return.

Chicago Cubs

Justin Wilson and Alex Avila: In one trade, the Cubs got Wilson and Avila from the Tigers in exchange for two prospects and cash or a player to be named later. Wilson, a 29-year-old lefty, has a 2.68 ERA this year. Avila, a 30-year-old catcher and first baseman, is hitting .274 with 11 home runs on the season.

Jose Quintana: The 28-year-old left-handed Quintana didn’t have to go very far after he was dealt from the White Sox to the Cubs. In six big league seasons, he holds a 3.49 ERA, but 4.16 mark this year. In return, the Sox got four prospects.
