ASU loses LB Christian Sam, its third NFL Draft early-entrant

Jan 8, 2018, 11:34 AM

Arizona State linebacker Christian Sam announced Monday that he will enter the 2018 NFL Draft, becoming the third Sun Devil to choose going pro over returning under first-year coach Herm Edwards.

The leading tackler from 2017 joins defensive lineman JoJo Wicker and offensive lineman Sam Jones in leaving school with one year of eligibility left. Sam made the announcement official on his Twitter account.

Sam recorded 127 tackles for the 7-5 Sun Devils as a junior while also compiling 9.5 tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks, one forced fumble and one interception. His total tackles ranked third among Power Five conference linebackers.

The 6-foot-2, 237-pound redshirt junior out of Allen, Texas, leaves ASU after collecting 98 tackles as a sophomore and missing almost all of his junior season in 2016 because of a knee injury suffered in the season opener.

According to NFLDraftScout.com, Sam is ranked 27th out of 102 inside linebacker prospects.
