Arizona State basketball coach Bobby Hurley has agreed to a contract extension.

Hurley’s contract extension was said to have been in the works for some time, as Hurley made comments in December about his desire to remain at Arizona State.

“I love it here. We’ll take care of that, believe me,” he told Bickley and Marotta on 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station last month. “I know that this is where I want to be, so I have no issues saying that, 100 percent. We’re building something special here. I’m loving the way we play, the style — it’s exactly what I had a vision for in terms of how we entertain people in addition to winning basketball games.”

The extension reportedly includes a clause that says Hurley would owe ASU part of the contract back if he were to leave for another job.

Hurley was hired by the Sun Devils in 2015 and was given an extension the following season. Hurley’s base salary was reportedly $1.2 million with the extension, making him one of the lowest paid head coaches in the NCAA.

According to SunDevilSource.com’s Chris Karpman, Hurley’s contract now runs through June of 2022 and includes a salary increase from $1.4 million to $2.1 million beginning on July 1. He will also receive annual raises of $100,000 beginning in July of 2019 and a $1 million retention bonus on Jan. 1, 2022.

The salary increase makes Hurley one of the top 25 highest paid coaches among public schools.

Hurley has quickly turned around the Sun Devils’ program since he arrived, making Arizona State a draw for some of the best recruits in the country.

This season, after the Sun Devils started 12-0 for the first time in school history, including wins over Xavier and Kansas at Allen Field House, Hurley and the Sun Devils landed a commitment from five-star recruit Taeshon Cherry.

The Sun Devils (16-5, 4-5) are on the road Thursday to take on the Washington Huskies before a Sunday matchup at Washington State.
