Arizona State basketball star point guard Remy Martin has declared for the NBA Draft.

“I would like to thank God for giving me the ability to play the game that I love,” Martin’s statement read. “I am so thankful for the constant support, especially from my family who has always encouraged me to pursue my goals. I also want to thank my teammates, Coach Hurley and the entire coaching staff for trusting me and allowing me to be myself on and off the court.

“Starting from a young age, I have worked towards the opportunity to play in the NBA and I have now decided to take another step into making my dream a reality. I will forever cherish the time I have spent at ASU; Arizona will always be a home to me because of the ASU supporters and 942 Crew!”

Martin, a junior, had a year of eligibility remaining.

While the coronavirus pandemic has created uncertainty around just about everything in the sports world, it was already true that the NCAA has altered its rules some in recent years to provide flexibility for players who want to return to school after declaring for the draft.

The NBA Draft was scheduled for June 25 but could potentially be pushed back if the coronavirus pandemic requires such a change.

Martin played three seasons at ASU and averaged 13.8 points, 4.0 assists and 3.1 rebounds in 30.0 minutes per game.

This season, Martin played 31 games and shot 43.2% from the field and 33.5% from three while averaging 19.1 points, 4.1 assists and 3.1 rebounds a game. He was selected to the All-Pac-12 First Team.

He and his teammates didn’t get to play in the Pac-12 or NCAA Tournament because of the COVID-19 pandemic causing widespread cancellations of sporting events.

Already since the end of the season, ASU has lost Elias Valtonen and Khalid Thomas to the transfer portal. Seniors Rob Edwards and Mickey Mitchell have already played through four years in college. Now, Martin moves on.

Fellow guard Alonzo Verge won Pac-12 Sixth Man of the Year and will presumably take Martin’s minutes next season.
