Rams down safeties Taylor Rapp, Fuller for Wild Card game vs. Cardinals

Jan 15, 2022, 2:26 PM

The Los Angeles Rams won’t have either of their starting safeties in Monday’s Wild Card round game against the Arizona Cardinals.

The Rams ruled Taylor Rapp out on Saturday as he remains in concussion protocols. Fellow starter Jordan Fuller went down with an ankle injury last week and is on injured reserve.

Los Angeles has not been without its safety tandem much this year. Rapp played all 17 games of the regular season and Fuller 16.

Rapp leads the team in solo tackles with 64 and Fuller is second with 63. The former had 16 tackles in two games against Arizona this year while Fuller had 13.

Nick Scott and Terrell Burgess are the next two safeties on the depth chart. The Rams recently signed veteran Eric Weddle, who has not played since the 2019 season.

Scott and Burgess have often been on the field in sub-packages this year.

Fuller is also the signal caller for L.A.’s defense, so the Rams will have to figure out how to adjust that element.

“You’re losing your leader, losing a guy that communicates really well, a guy that does all those things great,” defensive coordinator Raheem Morris said this week.

“Fuller going down with the mic, Jalen (Ramsey) took it over to finish off that game, which he’s capable of doing. But he is a corner, and you don’t want to necessarily give it to him at all times.”

Rams head coach Sean McVay told reporters that linebacker Troy Reeder has a good chance to get the green dot on Monday.

The Rams and Cardinals will kick off at 6:15 p.m. on Monday at SoFi Stadium. You can tune in on 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station.
