Sun Devils improve, but fall short to New Mexico

Nov 19, 2011, 2:33 AM | Updated: 6:49 pm

After losing in ugly fashion to Pepperdine on Tuesday
night, ASU head
coach
Herb Sendek talked about needing to improve in a lot of
different areas if
his
team wanted to have a chance to beat New Mexico on Friday
night.

There was improvement, but not enough as the Sun Devils
fell to New
Mexico
76-71 at Wells Fargo Arena. With the loss, ASU falls to
1-2 on the
season.

Tony Snell hit two huge three-pointers in the last 4:25 of
the game that
proved to be the difference for Steve Alford’s Lobos, who improved
to 2-1 on the
season. The first three by Snell put UNM up 68-63 and
came after a
loose ball trickled through the lane and into the hands of
New Mexico
guard Hugh Greenwood, who found Snell in the corner for
the trey.

Just :55 later, Snell hit another three from the same
corner, right
in front
of the New Mexico bench that put the Lobos up by 8.

But Arizona State fought back. Trailing by only three
points, Trent
Lockett got an open look from behind the arc and missed a
three-
pointer that would have tied the game at 74-all.
