Felix cans three-pointer at buzzer in ASU win

TEMPE, AZ– Carrick Felix hit a three-point shot as time expired, lifting
the
Arizona State Sun Devils to a 60-57 win over North Dakota State at Wells
Fargo Arena on Saturday.

The game looked headed for overtime when North Dakota State’s Mike
Felt
canned a highly-contested three pointer with 1.8 seconds left to tie the
score at 57-57. Felt had been 1-for-9 from three-point range before
the
shot.

After Felt’s bucket, ASU called a timeout and had to inbound from
underneath their own basket. Chanse Creekmur threw a long baseball
pass
to Trent Lockett, who caught it at the top of the key, and found Felix on
the
left wing, about 25 feet from the hoop, and Felix did the rest.

The junior from Goodyear finished with 15 points to lead the Sun Devils
while sophomore Kyle Cain chipped in with 14 points and 13 rebounds.
The Bison were led by Taylor Braun’s 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting that
included five dunks.

“Chanse was a high school quarterback, so he threw a pinpoint pass to
me, I went and got it and just saw Carrick spotting up,” Lockett said.

Felix, who shot just 20.5% from behind the arc last season, knocked
down three treys on Saturday.

“For a second, I didn’t think I got it off in time,” Felix admitted.

The Sun Devils improve to 4-5 on the season and rebounded from an
ugly 69-61 loss to Nevada just three days earlier. Head coach Herb
Sendek’s demeanor was predictably a lot different on Saturday than it
was on Wednesday night.

“It was great to see our team celebrate with that kind of joy,” he said.
“That’s something we’ve talked about a great deal together.”

Devils shorthanded

The Sun Devils were short-handed as starting point guard Chris Colvin
was suspended by Sendek.

“He didn’t participate today because of conduct unacceptable to any
team,” Sendek said about the guard.

That meant more minutes for Keala King, who played a career-high 39 in
the win. King finished the game with only 3 points, but his three-point
play with 7:59 to go gave the Sun Devils their biggest lead of the game
at 46-40.
