A 20-point evening from junior guard Gerry Blakes wasn’t enough for the Arizona State Sun Devils, whose poor shooting and defense doomed them on the road Tuesday.

Led by 22 bench points from JaJuan Johnson, Marquette cruised to a 78-71 win over ASU in a game that wasn’t as close as the score suggests.

The Golden Eagles (5-4) led by as many as 21 points in the second half Tuesday and shot 57.1 percent from the field while limiting the Devils (6-4) to 38.7 percent shooting.

Here’s how ASU suffered its fourth defeat of the season, by the numbers:

0

The Sun Devils are still winless away from home this season. They’re 0-2 in true road games and 0-2 on neutral courts. ASU is a perfect 6-0 at home.

The Sun Devils’ final three non-conference games are in Tempe — Saturday vs. Lehigh, Dec. 23 vs. Detroit and Dec. 28 vs. Harvard — before they open Pac-12 play at No. 3 Arizona on Jan. 4.

3

Blakes’ 20-point performance was his third of the season. He scored a season-high 23 in a 78-71 win over Colgate on Nov. 29.

7

The 7-point loss was ASU’s most lopsided defeat of the season. The Sun Devils’ previous three losses were by a combined 11 points. They lost to Maryland and Alabama by five points apiece, and suffered a one-point defeat at Texas A&M.

8

Senior forward Shaquille McKissic was limited to eight points on 3-of-11 shooting from the field (27.2 percent) Tuesday. McKissic came in shooting 50.9 percent from the field this season.

10

ASU out-rebounded Marquette 34-32 Tuesday, led by a game-high 10 boards by junior forward Eric Jacobsen.

16 (part I)

ASU received just 16 points off its bench Tuesday. Sophomore forward Savon Goodman had seven of them.

16 (part II)

ASU’s 16 turnovers helped the Golden Eagles build a big advantage.
