The Pulse: ASU made the right call in parting with Herb Sendek

Mar 26, 2015, 4:38 PM | Updated: 4:39 pm

On Tuesday, Arizona State University made the decision to part with head basketball coach Herb Sendek.

The move did not come as much of a surprise, but it did come with a little controversy.

Vice president for university athletics Ray Anderson ‘It was time to upgrade the program’, but ESPN NCAA analyst Jay Bilas, as a guest of Burns and Gambo on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM Wednesday, said the best move ASU could have made was no move at all.

That’s all well and good, but we wondered what you, our readers, thought. So, in our Sanderson Ford Poll Question of the Day, we asked if relieving Sendek of his duties was the right move for Arizona State.

We tallied 1,105 votes, and the majority seemed to agree with Anderson. A total of 585 votes — or 53 percent — went to “Sure, program must strive for better,” while another 361 votes — or 33 percent — went to, “Maybe, but not sure Devils can do better.”

Very few people feel that a move needed to be made simply because Sendek, who posted a 159-137 record in nine seasons in Tempe, is not a good coach. However, there are even fewer people who believed that making a change was the wrong move because the coach was building something good in Tempe.
