It’s been a week since Arizona State fired head men’s basketball coach Herb Sendek.
In the week that has followed, several coaches — Steve Lavin, Bobby Hurley and Josh Pastner, to name a few — have been linked to the vacant coaching position.
But no name has been mentioned more prominently than Duke associate head coach Jeff Capel, who met with Arizona State officials Monday.
According to Gary Parrish of CBSSports.com, the meeting was a positive one.
A source close to the Arizona State program told CBSSports.com that Jeff Capel’s meeting with ASU officials on Monday “went well,” and that the two sides plan to speak again. Still, a source said, it’s unlikely anything will be finalized until Duke’s season is completed.
Capel is helping the Blue Devils get ready for a Final Four matchup against Michigan State Saturday in Indianapolis.
He’s been on Mike Krzyzewski’s staff since 2011 after head coaching stints at VCU and Oklahoma. The 40-year-old has a career record of 175-110 and has made three NCAA Tournament appearances in nine seasons on the sideline.
