ESPN’s Goodman gives Arizona State an A- for hiring Bobby Hurley

Apr 10, 2015, 7:30 PM | Updated: 7:36 pm

Bobby Hurley has yet to coach a game for the Arizona State Sun Devils, but the buzz surrounding his hire is noticeable.

Hurley, who helped guide the Duke Blue Devils to back-to-back national championships in 1991 and 1992, is a national name who is one of the rising stars in the coaching ranks.

The 43-year-old has only been a head coach for two years, but last season guided Buffalo to its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance.

That is why people are excited, and it’s why ESPN’s Jeff Goodman, in an Insider piece grading all the D-I hires, gave ASU an A- for landing Hurley.

Arizona State swung and missed at Jeff Capel, but I believe they have gotten as good of a coach as they are going to get with Hurley. Is he a West Coast guy? Nope. But he has a strong name nationally and is a high-energy guy who will get after it. The key will be hiring at least one assistant who is strong on the West Coast.

In his introductory press conference Friday, Hurley talked about having assistants who will help him recruit out West, but added the goal is to have a national recruiting base.
