Fitzgerald anxious to get back on the field

PHOENIX – Larry Fitzgerald took batting practice at Chase Field on Tuesday before the Diamondbacks game.

The Cardinals’ wide receiver is anxious to get on a playing field he is more accustomed to and eradicating the bitter taste of last season.

“I’m looking forward to getting back on the field so we can figure it all out and go,” said Fitzgerald.

Speculation has run rampant during the offseason over who will be the Cardinals starting quarterback next season.

Fitzgerald said management hasn’t told him what direction the franchise is leaning towards, but he expressed confidence with holdovers John Skelton and Max Hall if the team doesn’t add another signal caller.

“I like the way Skelton played late in the year. Both those guys have good potential,” said Fitzgerald.

However, Fitzgerald had positive things to say about Cam Newton who might be available when the team picks at number five in the draft this month.

“He’ll be a good pro. When you’re a player that talented on that level in the SEC doing it every single week, it’s going to be hard to deny what he’s going to be able to do in the NFL,” said Fitzgerald.

Newton’s stock has fluctuated lately with many criticizing him for not having an NFL arm to play quarterback.

Fitzgerald isn’t buying into any of Newton’s doubters.

“You look at guys like Donovan McNabb that did a phenomenal job of adjusting or even Michael Vick who was a running quarterback in college and he’s become a really good drop back passer with the ability to run which presents even more challenges for a team to deal with,” said Fitzgerald.

No matter who becomes the Cardinals quarterback, Fitzgerald is just hoping to be able to play as the lockout could cancel the season.

“It doesn’t seem right to go into September without football. It’s hard to wrap my mind around it.”
