Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo did what no others have done before on Yahoo! Sports’ weekly series, Old Baseball Cards.
He ate a piece of 30-year-old gum.
“Crunchy,” Lovullo said as he bit into the piece of gum. “I might just swallow it because it is like a piece of sugar. I’m going to swallow it, it’s going down.”
Lovullo joined host Mike Oz on the weekly show that features members of the MLB community opening packs of old baseball cards. The reigning National League Manager of the year opened a pack of 1990 Topps cards, which were famous for including gum with the cards.
Inside Lovullo’s pack included a rookie card for Atlanta Braves pitcher Steve Avery and Pittsburgh Pirates’ slugger Bobby Bonilla.
Lovullo also pulled the card of former Baltimore Orioles first baseman Jim Traber, who was the color analyst for the Diamondbacks radio broadcasts on what was then 620 KTAR when Arizona won the 2001 World Series over the New York Yankees.
Shortly after Lovullo revealed the last card in his pack, he volunteered to eat the aged stick of gum. The request came as a surprise to Oz, who had never had a guest eat it, let alone willingly do so.
Despite his fearless task and iron stomach, Lovullo admittedly regretted the decision.
“It’s really bad,” he said. “Stay away from it.”
