Yankees misspell Jacoby Ellsbury’s name in first home game

Apr 8, 2014, 1:18 AM | Updated: 5:15 am

Over the offseason, former Boston Red Sox outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury scored a seven-year, $153 million deal with the New York Yankees.

Being that he was one of the team’s biggest free-agent signings entering the 2014 season, you would think everybody in the organization would be familiar with the 30-year-old speed demon — including the spelling of his name.

Not so, apparently.

In Ellsbury’s first regular season game at Yankee Stadium, he walked to the plate with his name spelled incorrectly on the video board.

And no, they didn’t accidentally call him “Jacob.”

A fan direct-tweeted the following picture Monday to ESPN reporter Darren Rovell:

Perhaps we can give the team the benefit of the doubt and write it off as a typo, being that just the “b” and “u” were switched in the center fielder’s last name.

The picture does reveal that the Yankees weren’t able to spot the error on first instance, though, since the photo looks to have been taken during the bottom of the sixth inning when Ellsbury had already had three at-bats. Let’s hope they can get it together before the team’s next game Tuesday.

The spelling error did not appear to hinder his performance, however. Ellsbury put together a pretty solid game, going 2-for-4 and driving in one run as the Yankees beat the Baltimore Orioles 4-2 to move their record above .500.
