Kung Fu Panda wrecks reporter’s laptop

Jun 4, 2014, 3:38 PM | Updated: 3:47 pm

We’re not gonna lie — watching and covering a Major League game from the press box is pretty sweet. Great vantage point, good conversation among reporters and depending on the venue, pretty good food and drink, too.

But it’s not without its occupational hazards.

Just ask Cincinnati Reds beat reporter Mark Sheldon.

Sheldon was putting the finishing touches on a game story for MLB.com Tuesday night at Great American Ballpark. Apparently Pablo Sandoval of the San Francisco Giants had other ideas.

With the Reds leading 8-3 with two outs in the top of the eighth inning, Sandoval fouled a 3-2 pitch back into the press box — a pretty common occurrence. A lot of reporters will flip their laptops down during live play, but Sheldon didn’t on that particular pitch. He paid for it.

The foul ball shattered Sheldon’s computer, before he had submitted the story. All work, gone. All everything, gone.

Sheldon was able to re-write his story on a colleague’s laptop and he got a free baseball out of the deal.
