Arizona’s Deandre Ayton has been named one of 15 finalists for the John R. Wooden Award handed out to the most outstanding player in college basketball.
The nomination comes at a trying time for Ayton who’s eligibility was put into question after reports had surfaced of a wiretapped conversation between Sean Miller and Christian Dawkins in which the two allegedly discussed paying $100,000 for Ayton’s commitment to the University of Arizona.
This weekend, however, has been all smiles for Ayton who shed off the distraction and led the Wildcats to a 75-67 win over the Stanford Cardinal recording his 20th double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Ayton is one of four freshman who was named a finalist and the only player named from the Pac-12 conference. The Big12 lead all conferences with five nominations.
Voting for the the winner of the Wooden Award will occur from March 12th-19th and the winner will be announced on Friday, April 6.
