D-backs GM sees charm in Archie Bradley’s honesty about soiled pants

Jun 27, 2018, 12:24 PM

It takes calm nerves to enter an MLB baseball game pitching a high-pressure situations.

Might the ability to stay calm in that scenario be linked to Diamondbacks reliever Archie Bradley’s nerve when admitting that, yes, as a grown man, he pooped his pants on the job?

The topic came up on The Jim Rome Show on Wednesday, when the sports talk host asked Arizona general manager Mike Hazen about Bradley’s admission that he made a little mess in his pants before entering a game for the D-backs.

“Look, you’d rather he do it before the outing than while he’s out on the mound, right? So if it’s gotta happen, it’s gotta happen,” Hazen said. “This guy, his personality is what you see is what you get with Archie. You know, what you see what the lights are on, what you see when the lights are off, it’s 24-7, go-go-go.

“And the best thing I can say about Archie — given even in the role that he’s in — is this guy is about one thing, and that’s winning every single night. That’s all he talks about.”

Bradley said on Yahoo! Sports’ MLB podcast on Tuesday that a trip to the bathroom before entering in relief led to panic when he accidentally relieved himself but had to hurry to the mound.

He got through a clean inning before his teammates found out that he wasn’t joking about soiling himself.

Hazen, who has probably heard quite a few personal baseball tales in his day, thought the bit was funny. And yes, that Bradley did do that and then told the masses plays to the pitcher’s open personality and stoicism on the mound.

“I’m sure that it’s happened on occasion. I can’t imagine — we’re all human, things happen,” Hazen said. “But he’s not afraid to go out and tell people about it. That’s part of his beauty, it’s his charm. Nothing — he’s not afraid of anything. I think we see that when he goes out and takes the mound, too.”
