The Arizona Cardinals have released linebacker Scooby Wright on Friday as the 53-man roster cuts loom, reports NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Wright, who in college starred for the Arizona Wildcats, was the Cleveland Browns’ seventh-round pick in 2016. Arizona signed him off the Browns practice squad in December 2016, and he appeared in three games for the Cardinals as a rookie.

Last season, Wright saw 10 games of action and recorded five tackles while serving mostly on special teams.

The 24-year-old recorded eight tackles for the Cardinals during four preseason games this year and had the opportunity to play with the first team in the first two games because starting linebackers Deone Bucannon and Josh Bynes sat due to injuries.

Before turning pro, Wright starred in three years with the Wildcats.

His best season came in 2014, when as a sophomore he won Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year, the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, the Rotary Lombari Award, the Jack Lambert Award and the Chuck Bednarik Award.

Wright finished 2014 ninth in Heisman voting, the highest among defensive players that season. He left Arizona for the NFL after an injury-shortened junior season.
