There’s a saying often uttered about D-backs outfielder Jarrod Dyson: “That’s what speed do.”

Apparently one byproduct of that speed is Dyson drawing interest from other ballclubs as the trade deadline approaches, and The Athletic mentioned the veteran’s name Monday in a story outlining potential targets for the Chicago Cubs.

The article explicitly said the Cubs were eyeing Detroit’s Nick Castellanos and Toronto’s Eric Sogard, but was less definitive about whether the Cubs had interest in Dyson at time of publishing or if it was just presented as a possibility by the author. Still, one of the authors of the story, Patrick Mooney, tweeted that Chicago was “tracking” Dyson and also mentioned that the Cubs “have been interested in Dyson … at previous points in his career and have always liked his skillset.”

Information elsewhere in the story was attributed to “multiple sources familiar with the team’s thinking.”

Dyson, 34, has slashed .254/.335/.369 in 79 games for the D-backs this year (284 plate appearances) while clubbing a career-high six home runs to go along with 21 RBI. He also has 21 stolen bases, which is not only tied for fourth in MLB but is on pace for 32 this season, only four shy of his career high now in his 10th big league season.

The D-backs’ indecision over whether to buy or sell at the trade deadline has been well documented, as the team would seem to have arguments supporting both sides of the coin. After dropping three of four in a series at home against the Milwaukee Brewers this weekend, Arizona is 33-37 since the end of April.

Still, Arizona is just 2.5 games out of the second Wild Card spot in the National League and would have to leapfrog only Philadelphia and St. Louis to get there.

“If Dyson is moved, it will likely come closer to the July 31 deadline, giving the Diamondbacks more time to evaluate where they stand this year,” the authors of The Athletic story wrote.
