PFF: Cardinals’ Kyler Murray placed in last tier of preseason QB ranking

Aug 19, 2019, 2:46 PM

Pro Football Focus ranked Arizona Cardinals rookie Kyler Murray as the No. 23 quarterback in the NFL.

While this may seem low, it’s still a higher placement than the Miami Dolphins’ Josh Rosen, who ranked No. 31 and started as a rookie for the Cardinals in 2018.

PFF ranked the quarterbacks based on every play made over a players’ careers and projections of future performances. Players are then placed in one of four tiers that give a general definition of what type of quarterback they are.

Murray just missed the cut for tier three and was placed in tier four because of his lack of experience.

Unfortunately for Murray, his sample size of regular season games played is zero. However, Steve Palazzolo of PFF says Murray has the potential to be great in the future.

Murray lacks traditional NFL size, but he has plenty of arm and was accurate to all levels of the field at Oklahoma while adding a dynamic threat as a runner. His fit with new head coach Kliff Kingsbury should only accelerate his development, and Murray earned that No. 1 spot on the PFF board because we think he has top-10 NFL potential.

Although his ranking wasn’t favorable, he was able to beat out a handful of last year’s first-round quarterback draft selections. Baker Mayfield, last year’s first overall pick, is the only quarterback from the 2018 draft class ranked ahead of Murray.

Overall, the New England Patriots’ Tom Brady received the top spot and the Buffalo Bills’ Josh Allen was last at No. 32.
