Three players from the state of Arizona were named as Week 5 Pac-12 Players of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.
Arizona State Sun Devils senior center Cohl Cabral and redshirt-senior defensive lineman George Lea were named as Offensive and Defensive Lineman of the Week, respectively, while Arizona Wildcats freshman quarterback Grant Gunnell was named Freshman Player of the Week.
This marks the sixth different player and seventh combined Pac-12 weekly honor that ASU has received this year.
Arizona State upset then-No. 15 Cal on the road 24-17 on Friday, resulting in the Sun Devils propelling to No. 20 in the AP Top 25’s latest release on Sunday.
Cabral helped lead the offense to 191 rushing yards, including 100 from running back Eno Benjamin, who had all three of Arizona State’s touchdowns on the night. Freshman quarterback Jayden Daniels also rushed for a career-high 84 yards thanks to the blocking from Cabral and Co.
Lea contributed to the defensive’s stout performance with four combined tackles and one sack. ASU also held Cal to just 245 total yards on offense, only 11 of which came in the fourth quarter.
Arizona defeated UCLA 20-17 on Saturday night.
Gunnell went 29-of-44 (66%) for 352 yards and one touchdown in his first collegiate start.
The freshman had a quarterback rating of 140.6 and completed a pass to nine different receivers.
Gunnell became the first Arizona true freshman quarterback to win his first start since Willie Tuitama in 2005.
He is also the first freshman to win a Pac-12 weekly award for the Wildcats since running back Nick Wilson in 2014.
