The Arizona Cardinals look for their first win of 2019 against a team with a winning record and they may have to face 12-time Pro Bowl quarterback Drew Brees.
Dianna Russini and Ed Werder of ESPN are both reporting that the New Orleans Saints are expected to start the 40-year-old Brees under center after missing the last five games with a broken thumb.
Brees was designated with a questionable tag following limited participation in practice on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
He hasn’t played since suffering the injury in Week 2 against the Los Angeles Rams.
Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson had expressed doubt that Brees would play with a bye week looming for New Orleans in Week 9.
Peterson has not recorded an interception against the Saints in three career games. He will be making a return to Louisiana where he spent his college career as a cornerback and punt returner for the LSU Tigers.
Backup Teddy Bridgewater led the Saints to five-straight wins in Brees’ absence completing 67.7% of his passes for 1,370 yards, nine touchdowns and two interceptions.
Saints running back Alvin Kamara was still listed as questionable with ankle and knee injuries. Kamara ranked No. 2 in the NFL in rushing touchdowns in 2018 and has accumulated 649 all-purpose yards through six games this season.
