San Francisco Giants hire Gabe Kapler as manager

Nov 12, 2019, 8:58 PM

The San Francisco Giants are the latest team to add a new manager to its staff.

According to ESPN MLB Insider Jeff Passan, sources say the Giants hired former Philadelphia Phillies manager Gabe Kapler.

Kapler replaces former manager Bruce Bochy, who retired at the end of the season after 13 years and three championships in San Francisco.

Kapler managed the Phillies to a 161-163 record in his two seasons with the club. He was fired at the end of the season with two years left on his contract.

Prior to his coaching days, he spent 12 years as an outfielder for the Detroit Tigers, Texas Rangers, Toronto Blue Jays, Colorado Rockies, Boston Red Sox, Milwaukee Brewers and Tampa Bay Rays.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Kapler was one of three finalists for the position along with Houston Astros bench coach Joe Espada and Rays bench coach Matt Quatraro.

The Giants aren’t the only NL West team to hire a new manager this off season. The San Diego Padres hired rookie manager Jayce Tingler.
