Arizona Cardinals defensive back Josh Shaw has been suspended through the end of the 2020 season for betting on NFL games, the league announced Friday.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced the punishment in a statement.

“The longstanding principle that betting on NFL games, or on any element of a game puts at risk the integrity of the game, damages public confidence in the NFL, and is forbidden under all circumstances,” Goodell said in the release.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Shaw was in a Las Vegas casino this fall with friends from high school. Having been on IR and not around the team since preseason, Shaw placed sports bets for the first time based on a misinterpretation of the Supreme Court ruling on sports gambling. The DB used his own player card and ID, and considers it an innocent mistake with a severe outcome. Shaw flew to New York immediately upon notice to meet with the NFL where he cooperated fully.

Sports gambling was legalized by the federal government on May 14, 2018, but has not been adopted by the state of Arizona. Regardless, players are not permitted to bet on NFL games in any way.

The league said that they did not believe that inside information was used and that his betting did not compromise game results. The NFL did not believe that any of Shaw’s Cardinals teammates were aware he was betting on games.

Shaw is allowed to appeal his suspension within three days. He can petition for reinstatement into the league on or after Feb. 15, 2021.

A defensive back drafted out of USC, Shaw has been on injured reserve since August with a shoulder injury.

He played three seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals starting 14 games before stints with the Chiefs and Buccaneers. He has one career interception and 127 tackles in 55 games played.
