It took DeAndre Hopkins less than two weeks after being traded to the Arizona Cardinals to make an impact within the community.

Hopkins donated $150,000 to the state’s COVID-19 relief fund in late March, and that’s something that Hopkins has always strived to do ever since he got in the NFL because of his own first-hand experiences.

“It was a hands-on learning experience for me,” he said Friday on a conference call of his time growing up without much at all.

“Not a lot of people gave back to my community at the time. Obviously, people in my circumstances needed help and no one gave back.”

With that and seeing former teammate Andre Johnson get involved with things like a yearly toy drive on Christmas, it’s something Hopkins makes a priority.

“We’re helping the community that’s supporting us and allowing us to play there,” he said.

Hopkins reached out to Cardinals president Michael Bidwill for suggestions on where he could help right away and that’s where the donation was inspired from.

“I thought it was very important for me to be involved,” Hopkins said.

It’s something you can expect Hopkins to keep doing the rest of his career and beyond.

“It was big for me because it’s always been a mission of mine and my family, to give back,” he said.
