Arizona Board of Regents releases statement on NCAA’s UA investigation

The Arizona Board of Regents released a statement on Tuesday regarding the NCAA’s investigation of the University of Arizona.

The Arizona Board of Regents was briefed and received legal advice yesterday regarding the NCAA investigation of the University of Arizona. The board takes these matters seriously and, as the governing body for the University of Arizona, is committed to upholding the integrity of the university, including its athletic programs. The board maintains full confidence in President Robbins’ leadership as the NCAA process continues and supports his decision to request review by the NCAA’s Independent Accountability Resolution Process. It is in the best interest of all parties to see this matter resolved as fairly and expeditiously as possible.

Arizona announced it received the notice of allegations (NOA) made against the athletic department on Friday but gave no details about what was found. There are reportedly nine allegations of misconduct, per The Athletic’s Seth Davis and Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde.

For the basketball program, Level 1 violations could result in postseason bans or other punishments.

The NCAA said Arizona “compromised the integrity of the investigation and failed to cooperate.”

The school has 90 days to respond to the NOA, and the NCAA will have another 60 days to respond and set up a hearing with its infractions committee. It could take several more months after that for the governing body to issue punishments for any wrongdoings that are found.

Over a Zoom call Thursday, Arizona head coach Sean Miller declined to comment on the investigation when asked by reporters about the notice.

“I’m not gonna comment on anything that is around any investigation,” he said.
