Arizona Diamondbacks set to outright Juan Miranda

Jul 14, 2011, 8:35 PM | Updated: 10:08 pm

When the Diamondbacks traded for Juan Miranda last November they did so hoping the 28-year-old could become the every day first baseman the team needed.

Swing and a miss, both literally and figuratively.

The experiment appears to be coming to a close, though, as Miranda, who has hit just .213 in 174 at bats, will be outrighted to make room for Brandon Allen according to Sports 620 KTAR’s John Gambadoro.

The move should not really come as a surprise. The Diamondbacks are only three games back of the first place Giants and can’t afford to keep playing a first baseman who hits for low average, little power and isn’t a great fielder.

Whether Brandon Allen will be the answer or not, it’s good to see the D-backs — specifically GM Kevin Towers — being willing to cut their losses rather than hold onto “their” guys, as they parted with Melvin Mora just a few weeks ago.
