The Arizona Cardinals announced on Tuesday that the team has signed veteran quarterback Colt McCoy to a one-year deal.

Arizona will enter training camp and, if healthy, the season without uncertainty about who steps in should Kyler Murray suffer an injury.

That, of course, is how the Cardinals’ playoff hopes and 2020 season ended. Murray was injured during a season finale against the Los Angeles Rams that Arizona needed to win to make the postseason, leading head coach Kliff Kingsbury’s decision about who was the backup quarterback to receive criticism.

Things went south when Murray was replaced by Chris Streveler, a rookie who at that point had not thrown an NFL pass.

Streveler went 11-of-16 for 105 yards, a touchdown and a pick-six in the 18-7 loss to the Rams before Murray was able to return from an ankle issue late in the game.

Arizona also had 2019 backup Brett Hundley on the roster all of last season but activated Streveler as the primary backup in games. Hundley is now a free agent.

McCoy, 34, has played 44 games with 30 starts in his NFL career.

In four games (two starts) with the New York Giants last season, McCoy completed 40 of his 66 passes (60.6%) for 375 yards and one touchdown. He also threw an interception and was 1-1 as a starter.

Originally drafted by the Browns in the third round of the 2010 NFL Draft, McCoy spent three seasons in Cleveland before being traded off to the San Francisco 49ers in 2013.

The signal caller signed with Washington in 2014. In five seasons there, McCoy completed 68.2% of his throws for 1,679 yards and eight touchdowns in 12 games (seven starts). He tossed seven picks.

Now on the Cardinals, McCoy joins a quarterback room that still includes Streveler, who is under contract through 2022. The Cardinals also signed Hawaii rookie Cole McDonald to a future contract in February.
