Arizona State men’s basketball transfer Taeshon Cherry announced Thursday on Twitter that he has committed to play for the Grand Canyon Antelopes.

“First (I’d) like to thank ASU for the last 3 years as a SunDevil,” Cherry wrote in a message. “I enjoyed my time at Arizona State and appreciate all that was given to me there. After talking it over with my family I would like to announce my commitment to Grand Canyon University! #LopesUp!!”

Cherry joins a GCU team that under first-year head coach Bryce Drew in 2021 made its first NCAA Tournament appearance.

The junior appeared in 62 games for the Sun Devils over the past three seasons but after playing in seven games this year stepped away from the team in mid-December due to personal reasons.

Cherry averaged 5.9 points and 2.8 rebounds over 17.8 minutes per game spanning his ASU career.

He shot 37% from the field and 30% from three-point range.

The 6-foot-8, 220-pound forward was a four-star recruit out of Foothills Christian High School in El Cajon, Calif. He was the 38th overall prospect in the 2018 class, per 247 Sports.

The Antelopes and Sun Devils are expected to meet in the 2021-22 season at ASU for the second game of a two-year series.

In the first game of that series, Arizona State defeated Grand Canyon 71-70 on Dec. 13 in what turned out to be Cherry’s second-to-last game with the Sun Devils.
