PHOENIX — Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Asdrubal Cabrera left in the bottom of the sixth inning Thursday against the Miami Marlins after injuring his right hamstring while running the bases.

Manager Torey Lovullo said postgame that Cabrera will undergo an MRI on Friday, but the tone sounded as if the team expected the infielder could miss some amount of time.

“It’s the leadership that we’re going to miss,” Lovullo said. “It’s time for somebody to fill that void while he’s gone.”

The veteran singled to lead off the inning and, two outs later, had a clean and surprising steal set up. But steps before he found second, Cabrera stumbled after an awkward step. He fell to the base and laid on the ground for a few moments as trainers looked at him.

Cabrera walked off with help and appeared to still be in a significant amount of pain when attempting to walk.

Daulton Varsho replaced Cabrera as the baserunner, but the D-backs couldn’t take advantage of the leadoff hit and trailed 2-1 after the injury. Miami tagged on three more runs in the next half-inning to take a 5-1 victory at Chase Field.

After the Cabrera injury, Varsho was placed in right field, sliding starter Pavin Smith to take Cabrera’s place defensively at first base.

Cabrera had gone 2-for-3 with a strikeout on Tuesday before his injury.

The 15-year veteran is slashing .289/.393/.474 this season, his first year with the Diamondbacks.

If serious, his injury puts the D-backs in a further squeeze with regular first baseman Christian Walker finding himself back on the injured list this week due to a lingering oblique injury.
