Athletes are usually pillars of health with toned muscles, flexibility and quick reflexes. It’s hard to imagine running a marathon with a cigarette in hand. Ironically, recreational athletes often sabotage their own physical performance and ability by smoking.

Some athletes mistakenly believe the benefits of physical activity will offset the negative impacts of smoking. A study at San Diego State University researched the combination of smoking and exercise and found women who smoked experienced a significantly greater risk of a heart attack or stroke regardless of their exercise capacity. In fact, in some ways, smoking impacts athletes more than their couch potato friends.
