Diamondbacks’ doubleheader sweep: By the numbers

The Arizona Diamondbacks celebrated Memorial Day with an impressive doubleheader sweep over the best team in baseball, the Texas Rangers.

The D-backs won with starting pitching and timely hitting in Game 1 and needed a thrilling comeback in Game 2 to get by Yu Darvish and Co.

Take a look back at a memorable day at Chase Field by the numbers:

1.5:

The D-backs began Monday tied atop the NL West Standings with the San Francisco Giants, but with a two-game sweep over the Rangers, Kirk Gibson’s squad finds itself alone in first place by 1.5 games.

3:

Coming into the nightcap, Didi Gregorius had just eight RBI despite his torrid start at the plate in 2013. Against Yu Darvish, the D-backs shortstop exploded for three RBI, including a two-run, game-tying home run in the bottom of the eighth.

6:

Paul Goldschmidt was forced to ride the bench in Game 2, but in the afternoon affair he went 2-for-4 with a run scored. His seventh inning single marked the sixth time this season he’s recorded a hit with an 0-2 count.

8:

Arizona used eight pitchers (Tyler Skaggs, Will Harris, David Hernandez, Tony Sipp, Heath Bell, Trevor Cahill, Matt Reynolds and Brad Ziegler) during their double dip Monday. Only Sipp and Cahill gave up runs.

9:

Left-hander Tyler Skaggs impressed during his first start of the season. In the D-backs’ 5-3 win Monday afternoon, Skaggs recorded a career-high nine strikeouts.

10:

Cliff Pennington’s 10th RBI of the season gave the D-backs a 5-4 walk-off win Monday night. It was Pennington’s second walk-off RBI in 2013.

12:

12 different position players recorded a start for the D-backs during the doubleheader. Only A.J. Pollock, Cliff Pennington, Didi Gregorius and Gerardo Parra appeared on the starting lineup card in both contests.

14:

While Yu Darvish didn’t walk out of Chase Field Monday night with a victory, the Rangers right-hander was spectacular through the middle innings. In 7 2/3 innings of work, Darvish tied a career-high with 14 strikeouts.

16:

The D-backs made the most of their final two games in the Valley for the month of May. Following Monday’s doubleheader, Kirk Gibson and Co. hit the road for 16 of their next 19 games.

Arizona’s Memorial Day sweep came in front of 54,260 fans. By comparison, only 37,266 saw the D-backs sweep their first ever Chase Field doubleheader against the Miami Marlins on August 22, 2012.
