No deal: Brewers’ Carlos Gomez won’t be traded to the Mets after all

Baseball Twitter got real weird on Wednesday evening.

With the trade deadline approaching, it appeared completely reasonable to believe the New York Mets had acquired Milwaukee Brewers center fielder Carlos Gomez in exchange for shortstop Wilmer Flores and pitcher Zack Wheeler. The New York Post was first to report the breaking news, and other media outlets appeared to confirm those reports.

Heck, even the Brewers’ official website had a story about the deal on the front page.

But the deal didn’t get done, and Mets general manager Sandy Alderson needed to make that clear to New York beat writers after the game.

Let’s leave the wondering why the trade didn’t go through for later (FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal’s sources tell him the Mets were worried about Gomez’s hip).

This story gets even more wild.

It turns out that as the news reports first broke, the Mets were in the middle of a game against the Padres. And because the deal wasn’t official, Mets manager Terry Collins didn’t pull Flores from the game.

Flores apparently caught wind of the reported deal from fans and, while playing short, got a little emotional — like tears in his eyes emotional.

Good news, Wilmer! You’re staying put.

The Brewers likewise seem happy to keep Gomez around. Milwaukee teammate Martin Maldonado tweeted a goodbye with a group picture that included Gomez before deleting it. He posted this message with a picture of Gomez and the Brewers all smiling on a team flight.

So how do we sum up this odd non-transaction?

By heading to Twitter, where the theme of this night is …

“Only the Mets.”
